According to the FBI, property fraud is one of the fastest growing white-collar crimes. The goal of these fraudsters is to change property ownership details in the Official Records by submitting fraudulent documents. They then seek to make money by tricking people into renting or buying the property.
While each county reviews the requirements for recording documents they have no authority to refuse a properly prepared document, even if it may be fraudulent. The best way to combat property fraud therefore is to take prompt action when it occurs.
To assist with early detection, most counties offer a Property Fraud alert. When a change in the records occurs an email alert is sent. This provides the earliest possible warning of potential fraud.
